Try this keto diet friendly Turnip recipe. Steamed and stir fried with a dash of Ceylon Cinnamon and other spices. Turnips have about half the carbs of a potatoes at 3.07g net carbs per 100 grams (3.5 oz.).

The best part about Turnip is it has very good levels of fiber, keeping you full for much longer. Yes it about 0.75 tsp of sugar per 100g of turnip and the onions will also add some sugar. But the addition of Ceylon Cinnamon and turmeric will mitigate the effects of sugar and add incredible taste.

Turnips are a boring insipid vegetable. The Chinese for example make Turnip cake, but that recipe is full of flour and corn starch. Not a good idea for health or for keto dieters. Then we remembered a steamed and very fluffy turnip recipe available at a Canadian restaurant called Congee Wong. While we could not get the recipe, we discerned the basic formula and then did our own trials to come up with this fantastic recipe.

The key was to steam it for a long time. Like 30 minutes. Then it was a matter of adding just the right ingredients in the right ratio and stir fry it. Now we have an absolute delight of a recipe. We were careful to use readily available ingredients so it is easy to make.

INGREDIENTS




DIRECTIONS



  1. Peel two turnips and cut into3/4 inch cubes. Then steam the turnips with the lid closed for 30 minutes. Drain and set aside. You might want to invest in one of those pans with a removable steam basket. We got ours at Macy's for $25.

  2. Heat frying pan, add 1 tbs of coconut oil for 3-5 minutes. Add onions and saute for 1.5 minutes.

  3. Add garlic, 1/4 Ceylon Cinnamon powder, 1/8 tsp turmeric, 1 tsp hot Hungarian Paprika, 4-5 pieces dried chilli flakes, 1/2 tsp Himalayan salt (or normal salt) and let it simmer for another 1 minute.

  4. Finally add the steamed Turnip mix well and slow fry it over medium heat for 9 minutes, turning frequently.

  5. Serve with some steamed broccoli and steak like we did.

WHY CEYLON CINNAMON



Unlike ordinary Cassia Cinnamon you find in the stores, Ceylon Cinnamon has low Coumarin levels, so it won't damage your liver, especially if you are a regular Cinnamon tea drinker. Besides Ceylon Cinnamon is mild, yet slightly sweeter. It is not spicy like store bought Cassia Cinnamon, but has hints of cloves and citrus with wonderful subtle aroma.

Ceylon Cinnamon is subtle and adds to create a more complex flavors. You would never know there is Ceylon Cinnamon in this dish, unlike Cassia Cinnamon which tends to be harsh and immediately makes its presence felt and often ruins the recipe.
