How to Get Rid of Aphids with Cinnamon

How to Get Rid of Aphids with Cinnamon

A simple 1% dilution of Ceylon Cinnamon Leaf Oil in water can be used as a spray to help eliminate aphids and discourage their return. High-quality cinnamon leaf oil, rich in natural compounds such as eugenol, is known for its strong antibacterial, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties that make it highly effective against tiny pests and organisms.

Aphids—also known as plant lice, greenflies, blackflies, or whiteflies—are small sap-sucking insects that are a major problem for gardeners and farmers alike. What many people don’t realize is that aphids often work in partnership with ants.

Ants feed on the sweet honeydew that aphids produce. In return, ants protect aphids from natural predators such as ladybirds, hoverfly larvae, parasitic wasps, and crab spiders. In some cases, ants even “farm” aphids, protecting and moving them to new plants much like livestock.

This is why aphid control is closely linked to ant control. If you eliminate or repel the ants, you significantly reduce the protection aphids rely on.

Ceylon Cinnamon Leaf Oil helps disrupt this cycle. It acts as both a contact repellent and deterrent, helping to discourage ants and reduce aphid activity on plants—giving your garden a better chance to recover naturally.

  • One 2 oz. bottle of Ceylon Cinnamon Leaf Oil
  • 1 gallon pump spray
  • 1 gallon water
  1. Start by thoroughly washing your plants with plain water. Use a garden hose set to a firm spray setting to dislodge as many aphids as possible. Take your time with this step and be methodical. Make sure you rinse both the tops and undersides of leaves, where aphids tend to hide.
  2. The goal here is simple: physically remove as many aphids as you can before applying any treatment.
  3. Next, prepare your spray solution. Mix 8 teaspoons of Ceylon Cinnamon Leaf Oil per gallon of water (approximately a 1% solution of cinnamon oil to 99% water). If you need a smaller batch, adjust the ratio accordingly while keeping the same proportion.
  4. For best results, use a hand pump garden sprayer (available at most hardware stores such as Home Depot for around $10–$15). It produces an even, consistent mist that helps distribute the solution properly across the plant.
  5. Important: Always keep the dilution at 1%. Stronger concentrations can damage or “burn” plants due to the potency of cinnamon oil.
  6. Set your sprayer nozzle to a fine mist setting. The goal is to lightly and evenly coat the entire plant without saturating any one area. Be sure to spray the underside of leaves as well as the stems.
  7. Pay special attention to hidden areas such as leaf joints, stem crevices, and the base of the plant. You should also lightly spray the surrounding soil where aphids may have fallen.
  8. The cinnamon leaf oil solution works quickly and can begin affecting aphids within a few hours.
  9. Repeat the treatment every two weeks, or as needed depending on the severity of the infestation. Because cinnamon oil is powerful, avoid over-application—too much can stress or damage the plant.
  10. Consistency and even coverage are key. The more thoroughly you coat the plant, the fewer places aphids have to hide and re-establish themselves.

  • ABOUT APHIDS

Aphids can be green, pink, yellowish, black, or powdery gray and very tiny, about 1/16 to 3/8 inches long. Some types have wings. They feed on flowers, vegetable plants, fruits and even shade trees. Unless you get them under control these tiny creatures reproduce on a massive scale.

Aphids dig into the plant like glue and suck the plant sap causing leaf curl, damaged buds and branch tips and destroy flowers. As they feed, aphids spew out a sweet sticky fluid (honeydew) onto the leaves. This fosters the growth of black mold which blocks sunlight from the leaves and destroys the leaf.

Why Aphids are bad

  • Aphids are among the most damaging garden pests because they reproduce quickly and weaken plants by feeding on their sap. As they pierce stems and leaves to extract nutrient-rich fluids, plants lose essential sugars and moisture, which leads to stunted growth, curled or yellowing leaves, and distorted flowers or fruit.
  • Another major issue is the sticky residue they produce called honeydew. This substance coats leaves, stems, and anything beneath infested plants. It also encourages the growth of black sooty mold, a fungus that can block sunlight and reduce the plant’s ability to photosynthesize effectively.
  • Even more serious is their role as disease carriers. Aphids can transmit a wide range of plant viruses while feeding, leading to mottling, severe weakening, and in many cases complete crop loss.
  • Finally, honeydew attracts ants, which often “farm” aphids for this sugary resource. In doing so, ants protect aphids from natural predators such as ladybugs, allowing infestations to spread even further.
